From the Left. /
From the Left explores lateral bias in writing systems through the medium of typography and the writing experience. An experimental typeface designed for the natural left-handed stroke direction serves as the foundation for structured writing activities, guiding left-handed participants through progressively breaking the directionality conventions of the English writing system, highlighting the bias embedded within design systems and questioning the neutrality we assume in design.
From the Left: A is a compilation of the explorations in directional logic, stroke order and ductus within writing systems. These explorations will later inform on how each parameter of the writing system affect the writing experience of a left-hander. Drawing from these findings allowed me to design an experimental typeface that focuses on the writing experience of a left-hander. The final type specimen of From the Left was also included in this publication.
From the Left: B is a series of writing activites designed to explore how conventions and directionality of the writing system shape the writing experience. The publication was used during a workshop held for left-handed writers as it slowly brings the writer out of the conventions of the English writing system in terms of directionality and stroke order. Eventually leading the writer to write freely without constrains of a writing systems to best optimise their writing experience.
From the Left: C is the final compilation of activity sheets from publication B done by left-handed participants. The publication compiles the writing done analysing the similarities and differences across the writing from different participants. Observing the patterns and trends before reflecting on the overall project.
